Diabetes Management
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a lifelong condition caused by a lack or insufficiency of insulin. Insulin is a hormone made by your pancreas that allows the cells in the muscles, fat, and liver to absorb glucose in the blood. The glucose then serves as energy for these cells. If our bodies do not produce enough insulin or if the insulin does not function properly, glucose cannot enter the cells throughout the body. It remains in the blood, causing blood sugar levels to rise well above normal.
Types of diabetes
There are different types of diabetes, with the two most well-known types being Type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent diabetes) and Type 2 diabetes (insulin-resistant diabetes).
- Type 1 diabetes usually develops in childhood or early adulthood and is always treated with regular insulin injections.
- Type 2 diabetes generally develops gradually in adulthood. It advances and can sometimes be treated with diet and exercise, but Type 2 diabetes is more likely to require anti-diabetic medication and/or insulin injections.
